OCTOBER 16 MEETINGS

On October 16th, NACFAM met with Ron Bloom, President Obama’s recently announced “Senior Counselor for Manufacturing Policy,” and reviewed with him the recommendations that came out of the October 6th & 7th NACFAM Annual meeting plus subsequent additional refinements from attendees.

Mr. Bloom understands well the importance of manufacturing to the economy and wants to have impact on the ground in practical pragmatic ways to quickly reinvigorate U.S. manufacturing to make it more globally competitive and create well-paying sustainable jobs.  He is very interested in NACFAM bringing projects to him to make such things happen, and NACFAM is also positioned to provide additional inputs to him as our members develop new points.

The same day NACFAM also met with two key members of the staff of Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL) who are working on his proposed legislation for a “Quadrennial Manufacturing Strategy” as he mentioned in our October 7th meeting.  This is a “grand strategy” approach that contains most of the recommendations NACFAM proposed. Since it will incorporate some additional ideas from the Bloom presentation and our meeting discussion with them, they said they will continue to ask for our feedback and support of their legislation draft.

Thus, from our various meetings in the last few weeks it is obvious that NACFAM is appropriately positioned with respect to the current administration’s views and with respect to Congress and the various government agencies.  The input provided in our Annual Meeting is very consistent with those who are thinking “Grand Strategy” and also gives us a framework for proposing projects for those who need immediate action.  Frankly it seems to us that both are needed and NACFAM’s strategy of doing projects to help inform its policy recommendations seems especially important.
